Questions & Answers

Quick Links:

1. How do I sign up for a TotalGamingFiles.com account?

To sign up for TotalGamingFiles.com, you simply click here and sign up with the username of your choice. Use a valid email, since we will then email you a registration confirmation URL. Once you click that URL, you can log in to TotalGamingFiles.com and let the games begin!

2. Do I have to have an account to download files?

No, an account is NOT required to download files from us. However, if you do not create a free account, you will be shown a colorful chart of the three echelons of TotalGamingFiles.com service each time you begin a download. The chart goes away when you register - and we figure that's enough incentive all by itself.

Bear in mind that bandwidth costs money, no matter who dishes it out. Often times, hosting sites make up for their bandwidth costs by throwing all sorts of advertising at you, or limiting the number of times a file can be downloaded per day (you've probably seen those lame "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" errors before). In order for us to provide you with a fast, stable service while not bombarding you with ads, we ask that you, at the very least, create a free account. Registration is quick and easy, and you'll NEVER receive any sort of spam from us - we do not sell or trade your information with anyone!

3. What about uploading?

You can always submit a file to our Main library by using the Contact link, located in the site's header - but unless you register, you will not be given any personal space. Registering a free account gives you 25 MB of space to upload whatever you want, and cuts you some slack on download speed cap and waiting times.

4. What do I get as a TotalGamingFiles.com Premium subscriber?

Tons! Uncapped download speeds with no waiting lines... ability to upload & download multiple files simultaneously... ability to use download managers/accelerators... a username.TotalGamingFiles.com DNS entry for your profile... 500 megs of storage space where you can designate your automatically-virus-checked files and folders as public, friends-only, grous-only, or private... upload images which are directly linkable and have thumbnails (like a photo gallery)... detailed user statistics... Groups management... free parking... window seat... satellite TV... and much much more!

5. Can I have more than 500 MB with my Premium account?

Sure! To get more than 500 MB, you'll need to check out TotalGamingFiles.com Group Share.

6. Are there other forms of payment besides using a credit card?

In addition to supporting the major credit cards, we will also take payment from PayPal. We currently do not have plans to support payment via check, cash, or phone.

7. I use a Credit Card to pay for Premium service. How do I cancel?

To cancel Premium service with us at any time, you must manually remove the credit card from our system via your Settings page. From Settings, look for the button at the bottom-left that says "Change The Credit Card We Have On File", click it, and on the next page, click Remove Saved Credit Card. You can reactivate automatic billing before your subscription is cancelled by re-entering your credit card information. This is also how you would need to update your card info if it were about to expire or if you've changed billing addresses.

If you cannot locate the "Change The Credit Card We Have On File" button on your Settings page, click here. (You must be logged in to view that link).

8. How do I cancel my TotalGamingFiles.com account?

When you sign up for a free account at TotalGamingFiles.com, the only information we get from you is your e-mail address. Therefore, you will always have your free account just in case there's ever something on the site in the future that you might want to log in for. There's absolutely no reason or need for you to cancel your free account, and we simply do not remove accounts from our system by request. If you do not wish to receive e-mails from us, simply go to your account's Settings page and check "Don't email me!" and then click the Save button. Your e-mail address will never be shared or sold to a third party. We promise.

9. As a non-subscriber, why do I have to wait to download files? Can't I skip past this?

Since we have tons of non-subscribers, we need to take measures to make sure we don't break the banks on our monthly bandwidth bills. The way we do this is by constantly monitoring our servers for utilization and, if need be, we will make you wait a set amount of time before your download will begin.

But, there is a way to skip this wait, and it's very easy. Simply sign up for TotalGamingFiles.com Premium service and never worry again. :)

10. I've finished waiting but am having trouble getting downloads to actually start. Dur?

You may be connected to the internet through a proxy, which could be causing the frame that our download button is in to not update properly. If a different browser doesn't work for you (Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, for instance), or disabling your proxy doesn't help, please contact us and we'll troubleshoot your problem.

11. How do I use a download manager/accelerator program to get files?

With any accelerator software, be absolutely sure that your browser has Cookies enabled!

If you use FlashGet, Net Transport, or GetRight, please click here for more information.

12. I don't see the "Begin Download" button anywhere. What's up?

You may have a privacy/security setting in your browser that is disabling "iframes", or you are running third-party software such as a virus checker or firewall that could be blocking them. If you are using the Adblock extention for Firefox, you will want to disable Adblock and try again. This problem seems to occur in older builds of browsers such as IE6 and Opera, so we also suggest that you ensure that your browser is as up-to-date as possible, and that you clear your Temporary Internet Files folder (your cache) every now and then.

13. I forgot my user name and/or password, what should I do?

Just use our nifty password recovery tool - enter your email address, and your password will be reset and sent to you along with your user name. If you're still having trouble, contact us and we'll gladly help you out!

14. I can log in, but as soon as I move to another part of the site, I get logged out. What's going on?

You will need to enable Cookies in your browser in order to log in and remain logged in at the site. In Internet Explorer, simply go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy Tab and move the slider to "Medium". In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Privacy and click the check box labeled "Allow sites to set Cookies."

15. How do I find a file?

We've broken down our primary categories into Demos, Mods, Maps, Patches, Utilities, Drivers, and Media. Additionally, there is an All Games category if you'd prefer to browse alphabetically through game files. You can usually get to the same file via multiple paths. For instance, you can find the Quake 3 demo by clicking Demos > First-Person Shooter > Quake III: Arena, or by clicking All Games > Q > Quake III: Arena > Demo.

And if you're having trouble doing it the good old fashioned way, use our powerful search tool. Just type in a key word or two, select whether you want to search our main library or through User public files, and set how you want the results to be displayed and you are set.

TotalGamingFiles.com uses Boolean Search Methodology; we find this guide on Boolean searching to be very informative.

16. What are User Picks?

As you add files to your Favorites, ten of them will show up on your personal user space -- if you are a Subscriber -- which you can then place in an order from 1 (most favorite) to 10 (least favorite). Your top five choices may then automatically show up on the front page from time to time, along with a link to your space!

17. How does the Friends system work?

When you add another user as a Friend, then that person will be able to see any files you upload that are set as Friends Only (they glow yellow in the file browser). It's really easy! Just locate the "FRIEND: Add User to Friends" button at the top right of any user's personal web space and click once to add. If you ever wish to remove that person, you can click that button again to remove them from your list.

18. How does the "Groups" system work?

Anyone can create a Group (you must be logged in to see this feature). The Group adminstrator can opt to require a password in order to join the Group. Then, every member of any group you belong to will have access to your Groups Only and Groups & Friends files and folders, and vice versa! The perfect way to share files among clanmates or guild members!

19. What is "Group Share" and how do I use it?

Group Share is a Premium feature that allows you and other Premium subscribers to combine your storage space. As an added bonus (because we love you and all), each account that is sharing its space with a Group gets an extra 100 MB of space thrown in. So let's say you and one friend create a Group and both of you use Group Share. Shazam, you've instantly got 1.2 GB of total storage!

You can add an infinite number of Premium accounts to the same Group and start uploading some truly enormous files. And yeah - there's still NO LIMITS on file size or bandwidth usage. Here's how to share your space with other accounts:

Step 1 = Click the small "Friends/Groups" button in the user admin toolbar (top right portion of the website)
Step 2 = Either create a Group by filling in the info in the light blue box (Start A Group) and clicking Create, or join an existing Group by entering the Group's name and password in the light grey box (Join A Group) and clicking Join
Step 3 = Click the "Manage Groups" button located just below the "Join A Group" box, at the center of the Friends/Groups page
Step 4 = If you are a member of multiple Groups, select the one you want to share your space with by choosing it from the red box on the right hand side. Then click the link that says "Share My Space With This Group". You can stop sharing by clicking in the same space

You can see who each Group member is and how much space they are sharing and using, as well as how many of those files are uploaded with the "Groups Only" permission.

Please keep in mind that if you are sharing your space with a Group and someone in the Group uses all of the available space, you will not be able to remove or edit their files. If you want total control over all the space, you'll need to subscribe more than one Premium account and link them together with Group Share!

20. When uploading a file to my user space, what do all the different Restrictions mean?

Before you upload your file, you need to set a Restriction on it so that our system knows who to give access of the file to.

- "Public" means that anyone with a TotalGamingFiles.com account, including TotalGamingFiles.com staff, can view/download the file.
- "Groups Only" means that the file will only be accessible by members of the Group (or Groups) you are in.
- "Groups & Friends" means that not only can your Group members download the file, but your Friends can too.
- "Friends Only" means that only those users you have designated as Friends can download the file.
- "Private" means that only your account can view or download the file. Nobody will ever know it even exists!

21. Can I request that you find and host a certain file in your main library, or submit it myself?

Sure. Just use the "File Request" form on our Contact page and let us know about the file you'd like us to host in our Main library and we will take care of it as soon as possible!

22. What is an MD5 Hash?

If you have a problem launching a file, you can confirm that it is the same version as the one you downloaded from TotalGamingFiles.com by comparing the MD5 of the file you downloaded against the MD5 in our database. If the MD5 is different, then your download may be corrupt. We recommend using WinMD5 for this purpose.

23. How can I identify how much space I have available for uploading and sharing files?

You can find your current usage and total storage capacity at the top-right of TotalGamingFiles.com (just under the buttons for Account Settings, File Management, et cetera). "YOUR DISK USAGE" shows a number like 5/100 MB, where 5 is how much space you've used, and 100 is how much space, in megabytes, you have overall.

24. How safe/secure are my personal files when I upload them to TotalGamingFiles.com?

Our privacy technology is so secure that not even our site administrators can access your Private or Friends Only files, and no file can be downloaded without first passing through our security mechanism. After uploading a file to TotalGamingFiles.com, it automatically gets mirrored out to every single content repository. Even if half of North America suddenly disappeared, you would be able to rest assured that your important files were still safe.

25. How do I delete a file or folder that I created?

When you mouse-over a file or folder in your File Management, a small list of options should appear over that file. Click Delete, and confirm that you want to delete it on the following page - it will then be moved to your Trash folder, where it will remain in limbo for 48 hours. This gives you plenty of time to rescue the file before it is purged from our system. You can have an unlimited number of files in the Trash folder, but you will not be able to restore a file if there is not enough free space in your account left to do so.

If you do not see the list of file options when mousing over files, your browser might not support that particular feature. You might wish to try the latest version of Firefox or Opera.

26. Is it possible to upload more than one file at a time?

You better believe it. Click here to learn all about TotalGamingFiles.com Desktop.

27. How can I get the URL to one of my files so I can share it?

Once you've uploaded a file in your File Management, simply mouse-over the file and select View. Then just cut and paste that URL in your Address Bar as the link. ALTERNATELY, you can browse to your public-facing space (username.TotalGamingFiles.com) and navigate to the file there.

28. Where can I find files for my Mac?

Because we do not have specific Windows/Linux/Mac sections, we identify OS-specific files in parenthesis after the file's title. So all you need to do is use the Search utility and look for the term "Mac" - voila.

29. I downloaded a file, but my operating system gives me an error when I try to open it.

Always ensure that you're getting the right kind of file for your operating system. Any file we host in our Main library is for Windows unless otherwise noted in parenthesis. Most Linux, Mac, and Windows files are not compatible with every other OS. Sometimes, if your download does not completely finish you will have a "partial" file and will get an error when you try to open it. If you think that's the case, try downloading again from a different content server.

30. I downloaded a file from someone's TotalGamingFiles.com space, but it has a password. Can you tell me what it is?

No. If it's a zip file with a password, odds are that the file was intended to be shared amongst a certain circle of friends (possibly on a forum or something). If you don't have the password, you probably weren't supposed to find that file anyhow.

Nothing in our Main library under Demos, Mods, Media, etc. will ever have a password on it. We cannot provide passwords for files that our users upload, because frankly - we don't know either.

31. Can I directly link images and other files in forums or on my website?

Yes. We do not limit you on bandwidth usage or individual file size, so link away.

32. Does TotalGamingFiles.com have RSS feeds?

Hell yes! You can get RSS feeds for both Main and User files. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks, and from there click File > New Live Bookmark and enter one of these URLs...

http://www.TotalGamingFiles.com/feed.php (newest Main files)
http://www.TotalGamingFiles.com/feed.php?u=x (where x is a user id #... for example, try u=66)
http://www.TotalGamingFiles.com/feed.php?cat=84 (latest files in a particular category, change 84 to category id #, can be any main or user category)

And of course there's a variable you can use to list a certain number of files (up to 50). For example...

"feed.php?c=10" would list the latest 10 files in the Main library.
"feed.php?t=popular&c=20" would list the top 20 most downloaded Main library files.
"feed.php?u=66&c=15" would list user Inside The Game's 15 latest files.
"feed.php?u=66&t=popular&c=25" would list user Inside the Game's top 25 most downloaded files.
